Product Overview: Sherpa 2-in-1 Pet Backpack & Carrier
While we want to share our first-hand experience using this particular backpack, let’s start with the basics – what exactly does this backpack offer?
The following information outlines the specific sizing, construction, and features of the bag:
Features
Size: Some pet backpacks are available in a variety of sizes. However, the 2-in-2 Backpack & Carrier is only available in a single size – Medium.
This limitation is partially due to its promise to be airline-approved.
If the bag were to be constructed any larger, it would no longer meet the strict requirements of the various airlines.
The bag specifications are as follows:
- 18” x 13” x 10.5”
- 3.50 lbs (or 1.59 kg)
It is designed to accommodate pets up to 16” in length, 10” in height, and 16 lbs.
Colours: Grey (only available size)
Stand Out Features:
- Top and side entry points
- Escape-proof locking zippers
- Excellent ventilation on multiple sides
- Removable, machine-washable base liner
- Free limited 1-year warranty
Adjustable Dual-Purpose Backpack and Carrier Design
If you’re considering travelling with your pet in a variety of situations, the adjustable design of this bag is a great way to avoid needing multiple products.
When the straps are in place on the back, it serves as an incredibly comfortable backpack.
However, by removing the backpack straps and repositioning one in the other placement, the bag transforms into a more traditional pet travel carrier with a shoulder strap.
Guaranteed On-Board Program
Speaking of its multi-purpose design, one key feature related to using the bag for air travel is the exclusive Guaranteed On-Board program.
Any product under this program has been designed with the rules of the major, best-known airlines in mind. This means the company can confidently promise that your pet carrier will be allowed to board participating airlines.
Before your flight, you must complete the GOB form.
During check-in, if there is any question of whether the bag will be accepted, this form shows that it meets all requirements.
If you are denied boarding specifically due to the carrier size, the program promises you will be refunded the cost of both your flight and your pet’s airline fee.
The participating airlines, according to the website, include:
- Air Canada
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- Delta
- Frontier Airlines
- Southwest
- United Airlines
- WestJet
Multiple Storage Pockets for Your Gear
Another critical feature to consider when planning your outdoor adventures is the ability to pack all the gear you need.
The bag includes 2 zippered storage pockets on each side. These are smaller but large enough to accommodate treats, food, and other necessary items.
One of these zippered pouches also incorporates a dog poop bag carrier and dispenser.
A larger flat pocket on the back of the bag (or bottom, in carrier mode) is a great option for important documents or flatter items like Pippen’s sweater.
Finally, a carabiner on the side is perfect for hanging keys, travel pet dishes, leashes, and other items you’d like to have close at hand.
How Much Does It Cost?
You can purchase this backpack in several places, both online and in person.
If you prefer shopping for pet supplies online, the Sherpa 2-in-2 Pet Backpack & Carrier can be found on Amazon. However, they are frequently out of stock.
PetSmart carries the Sherpa brand, but as of the time of writing this, that particular product is not on their Canadian website.
We prefer shopping at our local pet stores when possible. Pippen’s backpack was purchased from Global Pet Foods.
The backpack is not currently showing on the local Global Pet Foods website. It wasn’t showing when we looked either, but several other Sherpa carriers were.
We contacted the store, and they were happy to arrange for us to get the specific Sherpa product we were searching for. It cost us $99.99 plus tax.

Our First-Hand Review
We needed a reliable carrier to regularly travel with our pets on our outdoor adventures, for professional events (like our recent trip to Colorado for BlogPaws LiVE), or even to the vet.
After reading good things about the Sherpa 2-in-1 Pet Backpack & Carrier, we decided to try it.
Not only did it offer a comfortable hiking solution for both Pippen and I (Britt), but it also meant we didn’t need to purchase a second traditional carrier.
The backpack is smaller than many other options on the market. As a petite kitty, this is fine for Pippen. But it doesn’t work for Jinx, with her more “voluptuous” size.
The zippered pockets and attached carabiner make it easy to carry all the basics, including:
- A small baggie of kibble
- A packet of wet cat food
- Lick treats
- A backup slip lead for emergencies
- Two collapsible pet dishes
- A tick key
- A sweater for cooler weather adventures
The padded back on the carrier is very comfortable, even on longer hikes.
Unfortunately, no chest strap exists for those who prefer the added support. But, given the size restrictions of the pet, we haven’t found this to be a problem.
With large mesh panels on both sides and the front of the backpack, there is plenty of airflow.
We also love that you can open the top panel and fasten it back using the buckle at the top to let Pippen peek her head out and look around.
No leash clip is included to keep her from climbing out of the bag. But we were able to sew one into the top to create the added level of security needed to keep her safe while on the trails.
Overall, we are so happy with the backpack thus far. Pippen climbs right in, purring the moment we open it up.
This is an excellent option if you’re looking for a versatile pack for a smaller pet.
FAQs
How Easy is it to Clean the Sherpa 2-in-1 Pet Backpack & Carrier?
Whether your cat had a little “accident” in the backpack or rode home after a muddy adventure, making a mess of their space, the carrier is relatively easy to clean.
The faux lambskin base liner can be removed, machine-washed on gentle, and hung dry.
You will need to do a spot clean for messes involving the backpack itself. This means taking a damp cloth with mild soap and cleaning the dirty spots.
You can also use a spray-on enzymatic cleaner for messes like vomit or urine, but test the cleaner on a small spot before spraying it everywhere.
We use a disposable pee pad and a removable fleece blanket for longer trips to make cleanup a little easier.
Can I Fit a Small Dog in This Pet Backpack Comfortably?
Yes, the Sherpa 2-in-1 Pet Backpack & Carrier can be used for smaller dogs as long as they fit within the specified weight and size limits.
This means the dog must be:
- No longer than 16” long
- No taller than 10”
- Weigh no more than 16 lbs
What is the Best Way to Introduce My Cat to a Pet Backpack & Carrier?
It may be tempting to just put your cat directly in the backpack. However, jumping right like this could create a negative association, turning your cat off the backpack entirely.
The secret to success is introducing the backpack slowly.
Set the backpack out at home with either the top or side open. Allow your cat to examine the carrier at their own pace.
You can also help to create a positive association by placing one (or more) of the following inside:
- Favourite toy(s)
- Favourite blanket
- Their food in a small dish
- Treats
When you can see your cat is comfortable inside the carrier, you can try closing the door for just a few seconds before opening it back up.
Over time, allowing your cat to dictate the pace, you can work up to keeping the backpack closed longer, lifting it/carrying it around, and even leaving the house.
But remember, this is a gradual process. Don’t rush it.
What is the Warranty On the Sherpa 2-in-1 Pet Backpack & Carrier?
Each Sherpa 2-in-1 Pet Backpack & Carrier has a free limited 1-year warranty. This covers the backpack if there are any material defects or issues with workmanship.
However, this does not cover the wear and tear from use.
Any misuse or failure to adhere to the operating instructions also voids the warranty. For example, if the backpack is damaged from carrying a pet over the specified weight limit.
If you need to file a claim, you can do so online. Proof of purchase is required.
Final Thoughts: Sherpa 2-in-1 Pet Backpack & Carrier
So, is the Sherpa 2-in-1 Pet Backpack & Carrier the perfect choice for you and your cat? For us, it’s been a game-changer.
The versatility and comfort of this backpack have made it a top pick for our cat-friendly adventures with Pippen.
While this backpack is great for smaller kitties, like our petite little diva, it may not be the best choice for larger breeds. Take time to consider the size limitations.
Whether you’re planning to go for a hike or flying across the continent, this combination backpack and carrier has been a solid addition to our travels.
