Tested & Trusted: The Canadian Pet and Outdoor Brands That Make Our Trips Possible

We previously shared (and are continuing to update) our list of Canadian brands selling pet supplies and outdoor gear. 

In the current climate, shining a light on how many amazing Canadian brands are out there is the least we can do. 

One of the most common questions we hear since starting The Kas Pack is “What gear do you use for X?” 

What do we use for camping with our dogs? What do we use for hiking with our cats? 

Like all outdoor adventure lovers, we have found gear we love and trust. Many of these items are from Canadian companies. 

So, let’s take a moment to share some of our favourite Canadian products…

Kuma Outdoor Gear 

The first brand that always comes to mind when talking about our go-to gear is Kuma Outdoor Gear!

Why? Because we rely on this brand for most of the big-ticket items in our setup. 

The first Kuma product we were introduced to was the Bear Den Gazebo in 2021. It’s an easy pop-up-style shelter that’s durable enough to withstand the dogs. 

(And yes, Lucifer has tested it by literally bouncing off the walls while mid-zoomie.)

If we’re car camping, you can guarantee we have this shelter set up. It’s our bug-free zone, our shelter from the rain, our shade on a sunny day, and so much more. 

While the original Gazebo, which we use, is still available, the brand also now offers the upgraded Super Bear Den Deluxe Gazebo with more features (which we’re considering upgrading to) and the smaller Bear Cub Gazebo. 

After falling in love with the shelter, we had the opportunity to collaborate with Kuma Outdoor Gear in 2024, adding the Lazy Bear Heated Chair and the Lazy Bear Dog Bed to our gear collection. 

While Lucifer and I enjoy curling up together in our heated chair, especially during off-season adventures, the dog bed was quickly claimed by Willow. 

In fact, she loves her dog bed so much that we set it up for her between adventures at home in the cabin. 

In 2025, when it was time to replace our car camping tent, we decided to go all in on a brand we knew and loved, purchasing the Bear Den 5 Tent. 

Having now used the tent for a full season, we can confidently say it was a great choice! 

It has held up in major storms (like on our Sharbot Lake trip), cold-weather conditions (in Killarney), and everything in between. 

We firmly believe that you can’t go wrong with anything from Kuma Outdoor Gear. 

Dog Food and Treats 

When we talk about gear, we often think of the harnesses, collars, and toys we bring along on our outdoor adventures.

But what about what’s fueling our pets?

We proudly feed our pups Carna4, a Canadian brand that makes whole food nuggets in a wide variety of recipes.

This allows us the convenience of a “kibble” while still prioritizing whole food. We rotate between protein bases, including fish, goat, lamb, venison, duck, and chicken.

While we love the idea of feeding a raw or home-cooked diet, it’s simply not a good match for our lifestyle. But Carna4 is a great alternative!

In addition to an incredible Canadian food brand, we also have a list of Canadian treat and chew brands that we trust, including:

We love rotating our dog treats to give them a variety of options to get excited about, and these brands make it easy!

Cat Food and Treats 

Of course, if we’re talking about the dogs, we also want to share what we’re using to fuel our adventure cats!

While our treats aren’t Canadian (we would LOVE to be introduced to Canadian brands that make cat treats they may be interested in trying), we DO feed Canadian foods.

Our cats eat a combination of Go! Solutions kibble and FirstMate Pet Foods canned food.

This ensures that we meet them where they are happiest (Jinx prefers canned food while Theia likes her kibble) while encouraging hydration.

For treats, our cats love the Catit Creamy Lickable Cat Treats.

Lickable treats are great for training and also help to improve hydration, an important consideration with an adventure cat.

Accessories and Pet Gear 

Moving on to the items most often considered when talking about gear for pet-friendly adventures, there are the brands we trust for essentials like harnesses and leashes.

Starting with the basics, we love the Canadian brand RC Pets.

Our dogs both wear Momentum Control Harnesses on their adventures, and our go-to harnesses for basic adventures with Theia is the Adventure Kitty Harness.

For off-season trips, we have a few options we rely on to keep our pets warm and cozy. This includes:

• RC Pets Baseline Fleece (for both dogs and cats)
• RC Pets District Parka
• Shedrow K9 Chinook Dog Coat

Another key piece of our gear, considering we are camping and hiking with a reactive dog, is Lucifer’s muzzle.

We use The Adventurer from Mia’s Muzzles.

This vinyl muzzle provides protection while maintaining great airflow for our adventures. Plus, there are fun, customizable options for every style and personality.

For leashes, our dogs both hike on convertible custom leashes from Mysfit Mutt, a custom biothane creator.

Mysfit Mutt is also the brand responsible for Willow’s biothane collar.

Their gear is high-quality, custom-made to your pup’s needs, and available in a wide variety of different colours. We LOVE our gear!

Finally, regarding gear, we should mention the dishes we use to feed our pets.

More specifically, the dishes used to feed our cats are from Messy Mutts. We have a silicone feeder that uses the Messy Mutts stainless steel bowls, making it easy to feed our kitties.

This brand offers a wide range of fun gear for our pets, including food puzzles, dishes, toys, and more.

For the Pet Parents 

What about us? The people who bring our dogs and cats on our outdoor adventures?

There are many great Canadian brands we love for our comfort, as well as for the products we enjoy on our adventures.

One brand we love is Kamik. This year, we purchased winter boots for both John and I, which we put to the test  (living in Grey County) and fell in love with just days after they arrived.

I wear the Kamik Momentum 3, and John wears the Nation Plus model.

These boots keep our feet warm and comfortable as we navigate the snow-covered property around us here at the cabin.

Another brand that keeps me comfortable in the winter temperatures is Just Cozy.

This brand has a variety of lined leggings, as well as slippers, scarves, hats, and mittens. I have personally ordered the leggings and slippers.

When considering outdoor adventures, the fleece-lined leggings have become a go-to option for our off-season adventures.

Coffee is a necessity for outdoor adventures. In fact, I would describe myself as a coffee addict who needs their “fix” daily, at home or in the woods.

Regardless of where we are, we love getting our coffee from Muskoka Roastery Coffee Co. They have a wide variety of options, but our go-to favourites are Muskoka Maple (mine) and Black Bear (John’s).

Another part of camping (with or without pets) is the drinks you enjoy while around the campfire.

We love our craft beers, a passion of John’s. Some options we adore that are usually widely available at LCBO locations include:

• Muskoka Brewery (We love several of their beers, but Detour, Tread Lightly, and Mad Tom IPA are our favourites)
• Sandwich Brewing Company (White Bronco is a go-to for us)
• Sons of Kent Brewing (Our favourites are Juice Box IPA and 8 Track XPA.
• Collective Arts (our favourites include Jam Up the Mash, Cherry Limeade Sour, and Collective Arts West Coast IPA 31.
• Nickel Brook Brewing Co. (John’s favourite craft is their Head Stock)
