Pet-Friendly Cabins & Lodges for Off-Season Getaways in Ontario
While the warmer months are often associated with campfires and nights spent under the stars, extending these adventures into the shoulder and off-seasons can introduce some unique challenges.

(Unless, like us, you enjoy the magic of winter camping – but I digress…)
The desire to escape to nature doesn’t have to hibernate with the arrival of cooler weather. Instead, I encourage you to shift your plans to explore one of the many pet-friendly cabins and lodges in Ontario.
These glamping getaways offer a comfortable “home base” from which you can explore the outdoors by day, while enjoying a warm, cozy place to snuggle up with your pet(s) at night.

Why Consider Booking Pet-Friendly Cabins for the Off-Season?
Living in Ontario, we often find our “warm weather” seasons are limited compared to other areas of the world.
We have been reminded of that with the snow and cold extending well into spring this year!
Choosing a pet-friendly cabin or lodge as your home base offers many advantages for both you and your pet(s), including:
- Comfort and Warmth: After a day of exploring in the cool, crisp air, you can enjoy the luxury of returning to a warm, heated indoor space. It creates the perfect environment for you and your pet to relax and recharge.
- Protection from the Elements: Cabins and other roofed accommodations offer reliable shelter from rain, snow, and wind, letting you say goodbye to damp tents and chilly nights.
- Fewer Crowds: By extending your adventures into the off-season, you can take advantage of the noticeable decrease in crowds at even the most popular destinations. This is an excellent option for those with nervous, anxious, or reactive pets!

Ontario has many different glamping options, from rustic, unserviced cabins to luxury resort lodges.
The key to a memorable getaway is finding the solution that best suits you and your pet(s). Here are some options to help start your search:
Ontario Parks
Let’s start with an option that most, if not all, of our community will be familiar with – the roofed accommodations at Ontario Parks.
These structures vary in style and amenities, including rustic front-country cabins, remote backcountry cabins, yurts, lodges, and beautiful cottages.
Staying at an Ontario Parks location means you can access that park’s trail systems and other attractions, which can be a huge perk! However, the number of pet-friendly options is quite limited.
Booking is usually handled through the online Ontario Parks reservation system, but you can call to make a reservation if desired.

Parks Canada
Like Ontario Parks, Parks Canada has roofed accommodations available at many of their locations.
There are 4 locations that currently have pet-friendly options:
- Point Pelee National Park (Camp Henry oTENTiks 8 & 9)
- Pukaskwa National Park (Hattie Cove ALL oTENTiks)
- Rideau Canal National Historic Site (Canalman’s Cottage & Lockmaster’s House)
- Thousand Islands National Park (Mallorytown Landing oTENTiks 3B & 3E)
If this is your first time hearing of oTENTiks, they are a fun option! A mix of a tent and a rustic cabin, they create a warm, dry space while offering that “camping feeling.”
Booking for Parks Canada is typically done online using a system similar to Ontario Parks.
Cabinscape Tiny Cabins
Last March (2024), we had the pleasure of trying one of the Cabinscape Tiny Cabins as part of a collaboration with the company – and we can’t recommend them enough!
These tiny cabins are the perfect option for those who want to prioritize sustainability in their travels while still enjoying the luxury and comfort of a cabin.
Within their impressively small footprints, each cabin offers a kitchen space, bed (or two beds), and a fully functional bathroom.
They have cabins available in several locations across Ontario, including:
- Calabogie
- Haliburton
- Kirkfield
- Maberly
- Mountain Grove
- Pakenham
- Perth
We stayed at the Mica Cabin in Perth during March, and despite the cooler evening temperatures, we were warm and cozy snuggling our pups at night!
Plus, the view was AMAZING! With a big picture window alongside the bed, imagine waking up to this view every morning:
Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve
If you’ve been around The Kas Pack either here on the site or our social accounts for any length of time, you already know of our love for Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve.
But did you know they also offer cabins?
There are several two and three-bedroom holiday units and open loft log cabins located at base camp, with all the amenities close at hand.
The MacDonald Lake Lakeside Cabin is pet-friendly if you want a waterfront view.
Haliburton Forest is also the property where you will find the Cabinscape cabins we just discussed in the Haliburton area.
With over 400 km of hiking trails and various off-season activities, like snowshoeing, skijoring, ice fishing, and more, there is something for everyone!
Private Pet-Friendly Cabin Rentals
Of course, there are countless private pet-friendly cabins in Ontario; the challenge is finding them… but apps like Hipcamp and Airbnb are a great place to start!
Both apps are designed for a broader search, with Hipcamp focusing on camping and Airbnb on short-term rentals.
But you can use the filters on the apps to narrow your search and look specifically at smaller cabins, cottages, and other roofed accommodations people have available on their private properties.
Each app has a pet-friendly filter to ensure your furry travel buddy is welcome.
Pay careful attention to the rules and fees associated with each location, as there is no standard you can apply to all locations.
For example, some locations will be off-leash friendly, giving your pup the run of the property with no restrictions, while others may stipulate that pets are permitted to stay but aren’t allowed on the furniture.
We like to use AllTrails to discover nearby hiking trails we can explore during our stay.
Pet-Friendly Resorts in Ontario
Another option that is often overlooked is booking a stay at a pet-friendly resort that offers smaller cabin or cottage-type accommodations.
We haven’t explored this option much, but we have heard some great spots are available!
One that we are familiar with is the Trillium Resort & Spa.
Here, you can find beautiful cottages and lakeview chalets, with a limited number designated pet-friendly. But be sure to let them know when booking.
This is a great way to enjoy the amenities of a resort stay with your pet by your side.
Tips for a Successful Pet-Friendly Cabin Adventure
Planning an enjoyable off-season cabin getaway with your pet requires a little planning and preparation (as does any adventure).
To ensure you have a smooth experience, here are a few tips we’ve picked up along the way:
- Pay Attention to Pet Policies: Before making any bookings, take a moment to research the pet policies of your chosen location. Confirm that your pet is actually welcome, check for breed or size restrictions, and be sure you’re aware of any fees you’ll encounter.
- Know Your Pet: Consider your pet’s individual needs and limitations when planning, such as their triggers (especially if you’re camping with a reactive dog) and their tolerance for colder temperatures. If your pet is sensitive to the cold, pack appropriately. Warm bedding, coats, sweaters, and booties can all help to make the trip more comfortable.
- Be Prepared for the Season: Your packing list should include items specific to the season you’re travelling in. For example, cozy blankets can provide warmth in the winter, and extra towels are invaluable for drying muddy paws in the spring. Don’t forget a pet-friendly first aid kit!
- Stay Informed on Trail Conditions: Planning on hiking? Before heading out, check the conditions of the trails you’re considering. Off-season weather can impact trail safety, with potential for ice, mud, flooding, or closures. Local park/location websites and social media accounts are great resources for real-time updates.
- Be Ready for Weather Shifts: Weather in Ontario can be unpredictable, so be ready for anything. Pack clothing in layers – even Lucifer has layered outdoor gear with fleece sweaters and waterproof shell jackets.
- Respect Wildlife and Their Space: When spending time outdoors with your pet, always respect the local wildlife. Always maintain a safe distance from any animals you encounter and never allow your pet to chase or disturb them. This may mean keeping your pet on a leash even in off-leash areas if they are prey-driven or don’t have a solid recall.
- Obey Leash Rules in the Area: Speaking of leashes, off-season adventures don’t mean the rules go out the window. Pay attention to where leashes are required and respect others by following them.
- Always Follow Responsible Outdoor Practices: Follow the Leave No Trace principles. Clean up after your pet, properly dispose of waste, and ensure you leave your cabin and the surrounding natural areas in the same condition (or better) than you found them.
Off-Season Adventures Await!
By embracing the convenience of pet-friendly cabins, you can extend your adventures far beyond the traditional summer months (even if you’re not a fan of winter camping).
